Suicide Risk Assessment: Using Explicit and Implicit Measures to Predict Suicidal Behaviour

Summary

Combining the use of explicit and implicit measures to assess the important risk and protective factors in suicidal thoughts and behaviour. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the utility of recent implicit measures (i.e., the death/suicide implicit association test IAT) in suicide risk assessment, within clinical and non-clinical samples. In addition, how the implicit measures utility fares against well known risk and protective factors. Great emphasis is placed on the benefits of including measures of both risk and protective factors in risk assessment, as this is seldom done.

Why my research is important

In the last 45 years suicide rates have increased by 60%, with one death by suicide approximately every 40 seconds worldwide. This problem needs to be addressed, with the current research specifically addressing suicide prevention.
