SPECIAL NEEDS UNIT  (alias the Sunshine Room)


WHO IS IT FOR?

The Special Needs Unit is one of three kindergartens at the Child Study Centre. It caters for children who are experiencing difficulty in their local preschool or preprimary or who would be expected to do so. Difficulties may result from delayed or deviant language, social/emotional problems, behavioural difficulties, mild physical problems and some medical conditions.  These may be accompanied by mild developmental delay, but the Unit does not cater for children who primarily have an intellectual disability as EDWA provides services for these children.


WHAT DOES IT OFFER?

Children attending the Unit receive an individually designed program that caters for their special needs and aims to teach children the basic skills required to optimize their involvement in their local preschool/preprimary setting.  While attending the Unit children spend some time in integrated settings with mainstream children in our 4 and 5 year old programs and some time in a segregated small group setting. The relative proportion of time spent in each varies depending on the current needs of the individual child.


WHO ARE THE STAFF? 

Jenny Giddy is the teacher of children in the Sunshine Room and she is assisted by Karen Bott.  Both have extensive experience in working with young children with special needs and their parents.


WHO CAN REFER?

Referrals are accepted from parents, teachers, medical practitioners, psychologists and professionals working in agencies concerned with the care and education of young children.  Referrals should be accompanied by the most recent reports from any professionals working with the child.  They should be addressed to:
