DYSLEXIA PROJECT

The Dyslexia Project uses state-of-the-art equipment housed within the Perception Laboratory to identify risk factors for language and literacy difficulties.  The current team of undergraduate and postgraduate students is engaged in detection of a biological marker for dyslexia in auditory and visual processing.    This will permit early identification of children “at risk” of dyslexia who will then be assigned to prevention programmes in Preprimary and Year 1, before they begin to fail at reading and spelling.

FACTS ABOUT DYSLEXIA:
  • 5 to 10 percent of school age children with normal intelligence don’t learn to read efficiently.
  • Unless these children receive extra support at home and at school, reading failure reduces their academic achievement, and affects their social and emotional well being as well as their employment prospects.
  • These children can be helped if they are identified early enough!
The Dyslexia Project currently needs
ADULTS WITH ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE
AGED 20 – 40 to participate in research aimed at
preventing reading failure.
