The Child Study Centre is a unique resource at the University of Western Australia. The Centre, part of the School of Psychology, houses a variety of facilities for teaching, research and community service. These include three kindergartens, research laboratories and rooms for assessment, counselling, and group work with children and their parents.
Members of the CSC Staff include teachers, clinicians, research psychologists, doctoral & masters students.

Facilities

Kindergartens
There are three well-equipped kindergartens, one for 5 year old children, one for four year olds and one for children with special needs. Each kindergarten room is fitted with a one-way mirror and can be viewed from a sound-linked viewing room.

CSC Clinic
A suite of three rooms designed for use in assessments, interviewing and counselling form the hub of the CSC Clinic.  These rooms are linked by microphone and one-way mirrors.  There is also a large room suitable for running groups.

These facilities enable the CSC to fulfill three important functions within the School of Psychology and wider community:

Teaching

The kindergartens are used in a variety of ways in undergraduate teaching in developmental psychology, while the CSC Clinic resources form an integral part of both undergraduate and M. Psych training in assessment, interviewing and counselling.

Research

Each year children in the kindergartens are involved in a number of research projects, either as participants in studies of young children, or to help students or staff refine materials and instructions for studies that will be completed elsewhere.
Currently the Child Study Centre has a research partnership agreement with the Early Childhood Directorate of the Education Department of Western Australia with the goal of “furthering research and collaboration on best practice in early childhood education in Western Australia”. A recent research contract with the Early Childhood Directorate resulted in a variety of products:

Booklets
Speech Impairment and Literacy Difficulties, by Suze Leitao & Janet Fletcher
Examining How Young Aggressive Children Think, by Robin Harvey & Janet Fletcher
Easing the Transition to School for the Young Child with Special Needs, by Suzanne Luscombe

Book & Video Packages
Learning through Play 1: Curriculum and Learning Outcomes, by Loraine Corrie
Learning through Play 2: Teachers’ Roles in Children’s Play, by Janet Fletcher, Lesley Edelman & Lara Sampson.
Each member of the CSC clinic team is also involved in individual and collaborative research projects.  Their specific research interests can be found under Child Study Centre Clinic team.

The Dyslexia Project
Early Identification of Children "At Risk" for Dyslexia.
The Dyslexia Project currently needs ADULTS WITH ENGLISH AS A FIRST LANGUAGE AGED 20 – 40 to participate in research aimed at preventing reading failure. Details on the Project page.

Community Service

The three kindergartens offer a valued community service as a result of a unique partnership between EDWA and the University of Western Australia. EDWA provides the teachers who have been through a special selection procedure; the university supplies the buildings and infrastructure support and parents provide equipment.
The four and five year old kindergartens cater for children from the local community.

The Special Needs Unit provides small group support to children of pre-school age from the larger metropolitan area who can not cope with full integration at this stage of their development.

The CSC Clinic provides a range of psychological services to children and their families.
